Normally you need to go into command line to edit these but of you are on Windows there is a cool utility called WinSCP which allows you to connect to RPi and edit these files.

Editing and creating files can be easy using WinSCP .

Set a connection with your RPi with “SCP” as and enter the login/password for your RPi.

WinSCP is an open source free SFTP client, FTP client, WebDAV client and SCP client for Windows. Its main function is file transfer between a local and a remote computer. Beyond this, WinSCP offers scripting and basic file manager functionality.

For Mac OSX unfortunately there is no port but there are reports that it runs very well on Wine. The other option is to run under a Windows VM.
